My Simple-hearted Friend

Some people are very innocent and pure at heart. They are taken for a ride and sometimes get cheated by others. Here is one such experience, one of my friend had gone through.

My friends name is Sonykutty. By profession is a government employee. In addition to his regular work he is engaged in several other agricultural and social activities. Basically, this gentleman is a hard worker. Once after a tiring day's work he was travelling back home in his car. Few kilometers before his residence his car collided with an auto-rickshaw. He knew it was mistake because for a moment he was not careful behind the wheels. As usual, the autorickshaw driver jumped out and started yelling at Sonykutty. He also opened the door and alighted. Instead of shouting back at the opponent, he swiftly offered his apologies and disclosed that it is his mistake as he was feeling a bit sleepy while driving. By then few other auto-rickshaw drivers also surrounded the two only to side the fellow auto driver. They demand an amount of seventy-five thousands rupees for covering the damages and repairing the auto-rickshaw. Without any argument Sonykutty readily agreed to hand over the money as he was fully sure that it was his mistake. As he was about to transfer the cash his cousin, Viju, came by. Seeing his relatives car he stopped to learn what is happening. After hearing both sides and about the settlement they had arrived by then, he took a close inspection of the damaged vehicle. Viju, though younger, unlike his cousin has immense experience in handling crooks and cheaters. He could estimate that what they are demanding so as to cover the damages is bit too high. So he placed an alternate proposal to repair the auto-rickshaw by themselves and then to handover. The drivers reluctantly agreed to this under one condition that the repairing should be made at garage of their choice. Finally, both parties agreed to this. 

At the end, the story is that the damaged auto-rickshaw was fully conditioned by completing all works pointed out by its owner for an amount of twenty-five thousand rupees. With just one-third money of what was initially demand all works could be completed. This real story tells how good men are cheated by others.

How prepare for Seminar Presentations

Public presentations are a nightmare to many. Most people shy  away from making public speeches. Here are some tips for students on 'how a seminar presentation can be improved? '. The students are required to present a seminar on a subject related to their study, mostly at the end of the semester. Usually students feel nervous about this and commits several mistakes due to their inexperience.

Few guidelines for improving the seminar presentation are given below:

1. When presentations are delivered, always face the audience.

Face the crowd. Presentation should be delivered addressing the audience. This also shows your confidence level and mastery in the subject. 

2. Powerpoint slides should be easier for understanding by reading.

The slides prepared should carry only important points. It must run into several sentences and paragraphs. A reader who is new to the subject will be lost if you are not brief enough.

3. Number the slides.

Number your slides. Numbering helps to refer precisely to those slides of interest at the end of the presentation by the curious listeners.  Numbering also helps in planning the presentation for managing the allotted time frame.

4. When comparisons are stated, make use of table to list the parameters

Use pictures and tables wherever possible. For comparison on two entities, the facts could better be explained with the use of tables.

5. Give references used at the end

The audience may be inspired and wants to discover further after your presentation. Hence it is important to state the references used for preparing the work. It also important to include more recent works to make the work appear more update and authentic.

6. Be prepared for Q&A (Question & Answering) session

Never be ill prepared for this part of the presentation. Shortlist few doubts and questions that will naturally arise from the subject and find the accurate answers for them. A casual consultation with your friend prior to the presentation can help you by predicting few probable questions.

7. Project the right attitude and body language

When you stand on the dais, the attitude portrayed must be positive. The audience should feel that you are pretty confident and knows the subject thoroughly. Otherwise, the perceived image will be negative compelling the listeners to believe you are in the wrong place and may not pay you proper attention.

Lessons in Life

Some lessons are learned the hard way. Some may be the turning points and leads further ahead the road.

Two things I learned the hard way are:

1. One should discharge his duty rather than being an ignorant or escapist. If you vacate your seat without discharging duties, some else is always waiting to take over your seat and may probably insult you in the days to come.

2. Once you are in a leadership position you should misuse the position to insult, humiliate or sideline the co-runner. A real leader is one who cares equally for the entire team.

What is commonly found lacking these days is the professionalism in attitude and discourse of duties:

1. What is decided in a meeting should be confirmed with whilst implementation. 

2. And most importantly, what is discussed during the process of a decision making in an apex body meeting should be made public. All such internal discussions that are part of decision making process should not be made public, and what is binding should be  the final decisions or conclusions arrived in the meeting.

Confession after 25 Years

A small, in fact a trivial incident happened while I was doing high school 25 years back. While doing the tenth standard, our class teacher was one Sr. Georgila. She was an excellent teacher who took care all the twenty four of us in the class with a real motherly affection.

One day while she was taking the class, I had a paper with me used for some rough work. I just rolled it up and instead getting up and putting it in the dust-bin placed in the corner of the class room, I just threw the piece of paper towards the front corner directing the dust bin. Somehow the paper lost direction and fell right in front portion of the class room. The free fall of the piece of paper drew the immediate attention of all the students in the class, including our class teacher. This indeed made her very angry.

Sr. demanded the person responsible for this to stand. None did. I could not gather enough courage to stand up. Sr again asked who is behind the mischievous act, this time more harshly. The class came to pin drop silence. I became more afraid or rather shy to stand before the class so that every one could see the culprit. The day ended on a bad note.

After this I always felt sorry that I could not tell her the truth, especially to one who cared for our class so much. And later every time, when the time comes for confessions during prayer, I silently remember this for some reason or other and felt always sorry in not been able to tell the truth.

Twenty five years passed by. All batch mates got settled in several parts of the world. Slowly every one forgot everything until recently social networks became popular and many of us started getting reconnected. Then came the WhatsApp. One of my old friend somehow located Sr.Georgila. She is now very aged, around seventy five and engaged in social service activities in a distant  northern part of the country. He also shared her contact number and photo.

By then, it was going to be the new year. I thought this is the right time; I shall call her up and confess before proceeding to the new year. I called her up and spoke to her for a long time. She was happy to hear about us. Then slowly I reminded her about the old incident that happened in her class on a day in 1989. Obviously she could not memorize a thing. Then I said I was behind it and said I am really sorry that I could not tell you the truth then while I was student in school. She comforted me and said its all o.k as such thing do happen with students.

Still, I was very happy and relieved as I could confess this, which I was unable to 25 years earlier.

Role of Religion and the need for Standardization

The number of religions across the world is uncountable. All these religions enjoys a great role in determining the way of live of each associated human being. Infact it is the single thing that greatly unites and controls multitudes of men. Its a bonding that is much thicker than any other force.

Karl Marx had once rightly pointed out ' Religion is the opium of the people". This is very true in the past, present and will remain so in the future. 

The way in which people think and act are determined by the religion. Some religions however fortunately has adopted a wider thinking thinking and opened hands to all. Whereas some are shallow and never allows to think outside the box.

Two great thoughts are the ones set forth by the Hindu religion and Christianity. In Sanskrit there is an ancient writing 'loka samastha sukino bhavanthu'. This means about the global well being. Hinduism believes in that, the entire living things in the universe should live well and peacefully. 

And in Christianity, Jesus Christ teaches his followers ' love your neighbor as yourself'. Its is the prime duty of each man to maintain a sense of care and love for each other. Without these essential traits there can be no mutual trust and peace.

In modern world we have standards for all. There are standards on automobile emissions, on subjects topics to be taught in schools, quality standards for edible foods, standards for communication so on and so forth. The only thing that do not have to fall in line with any regulations is the religions. Religions for some reasons or the other are never touched upon and often left undiscussed even by intellectuals. Religions are man made. And there are newer man made religions sprouting in several parts of the world today. Thus it is a matter of significance that there must be standards for religions also. Religions must guarantee progress and peaceful co-existence. Its time to end destruction and fights based on minor difference. As a global citizen we must unite and live together.

The fact of the matter is that there should be clear cut guidelines that governs the attributes of a religion. Injustice in the name of the religion should be banned. Even the modern world see many fraud holy men surfacing from different part of the world. Each go by own imagination and utters rules of their choices. So such actions can be curbed if there are universal rules on Do's and Don't's.

The great son of India-Dr. APJ Kalam

The greatness in Kalam is that he was never after any titles.  But everything came to him. He never went by short cuts to achieve personal gains.

Secondly, he knew how to prioritize things. He put nation always first and never mixed personal interest and religion in to social life.

Few Great Novels For Reading

The Alchemist

A beautiful novel with no names for the characters. It is the story of a young Shepard who start out chasing him dream to discover the treasure. The novel repeatedly urges "If one decides to chase his dream the entire world will conspire in helping to make him achieve it". The Spanish boy sets out to the Egyptian coast after selling his herd and crosses the desert towards the pyramids. The adventures along the desert route is well narrated and depicted as real. 

Moreover the book has nothing obscene and could be recommended as a good read for any age. 

The Good Earth – Pearl S Buck

This novel narrates the story of an enthusiastic and hardworking peasant named Wang Lung. The hard works he and his wife put in farming the land ultimately makes them rich and prosperous.

Wang Lung’s father also a wise farmer gives him correct advices especially at the time of selecting women as wife. Wang Lung wanted his wife to be beautiful, but the old father questions him – ‘What will we do with a pretty woman?’.

Wang Lung accepts a young woman slave named O- lan from the local landlord as wife. Though she was not any good-looking, was intelligent and equally hardworking as her husband.

Wang Lung and O lan go through several hardships in life, but overcomes all odds with the hard works they put in on land. Many times O lan surprises Wang Lung with her intelligence and pragmatic solutions. Gradually they get wealthier and richer.

Towards the end, the riches slightly change the habits of Wang Lung but not his love for land and the earth that gave him everything. This is evident when he overhears a discussion between his sons. In the last chapter, his two sons can be seen discussing about selling the land and investing the money in shipping and rice trade. The moment Wang Lung hears this; he burst into tears and pleads with his sons not sell the land.

The Good Earth won Pulitzer Prize. The novel was translated into over thirty languages.

Pearl S Buck was born in 26 June 1892, and spent her childhood in China. Her other novels are East Wind, West Wind, A House Divided, Dragon Seed, The Time is Noon. She was awarded Nobel Prize for literature in 1938.

One Hundred Years Of Solitude
- by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

The novel narrates the history of Bundias family. The reader gets an experience that almost makes it impossible to distinguish between reality and fantasy.

Adujeevitham - by Benyamin

This is the story of a poor Muslim youth from rural Kerala going to a gulf country in search of better job and prospects. In Kerala he `lived as a very friendly villager with the neighborhood and had immense freedom as a free bird. The situations when he reached his dream land were exactly opposite to his experiences in home country village. There he had to live in bondage under hostile employers who denied him even his primary needs.

The author is successful in narrating the incidents happened as if he himself had experienced and gone through every bit of it. Gulf countries are seen as a dream land by many youngsters in Kerala. But the attitudes of the Arabs towards them are not always amicable. Here he was a slave by all means in a goat farm. And for several years he could see the outside place or contact others.

The bitter experiences are extremely touching and how he escapes is also breathtaking. Author for some reason presents him as an optimistic and staunch believer of God. But, at the end few good people and the government of India comes to rescue bringing him to peace and home where his wife and son was waiting all these years without even knowing anything about him.

The entire experiences can be coined to a single proverb in Malayalam – ‘Akkarapachha’. Meaning that we have great regards for foreign land; blindly tend to imitate their customs forgetting the greatness and blessings of home land.

Men who surprised the world

 1. Alexander the Great

Alexander the great is the first in this list. He lived almost 2300 years ago and did what no one could do even today. He was the king of ancient Greek Kingdom of Macedon. He lived during BC 356 – 323 and had become king at the age of 20 after the death of his father Philip II.

He set out to conquer the world and defeated Egypt and the Persia at the age of 25. His invasion continued till the northern border of India. He died at the age of 33 and the reason of his death is suspected to be poisoning and loss of health due to excessive drinking.

He is important even today because he is still a benchmark against whom military heads compare themselves and his war strategies are still said to be taught in military schools.

Two things to be known to live in this earth

 The world is a big stage. Two things that are essential these can be narrow downed as:

1. Be a good actor 

2. Forget about the truth, and adopt all possible routes to march towards the goal.

But, know that at the end of a tunnel there is light. The success of the fraud hence will not stand long.

Kerala Nurses

Recently there are reports about Nurses from Kerala being held hostages in Iraq.

Nurses from Kerala can be found in every part of the world. Many sarcastically speak and look down at this profession. Recently, a leader from a Delhi based political party made fun at nurses from Kerala.

But I respect them for services they render. We realize the greatness of their service and value better while hospitalized. In those times at bed, every one wishes to be looked after and taken care off. These nurses are best in that. As a real sister or guardian they take care of all the patients.

On the other side, these ladies have to suffer a lot. Many of them have to work continuously for 12 hours. They have to be away from their children and family. Taking a day off is, most of the times extremely difficult. To add to this, the payment they get is very less in many private hospitals. Even in the midst of all these odds, they nurse people with utmost care.

One has to respect them more, because they earn a living through hard work. On contrary, we can find most of the youth today is after fast money. Many go after ant-national activities as smuggling and fake currency trafficking for making money for a luxurious life. Good things should be accepted and appreciated. And bad things should be discouraged or punished. 

"One should eat food from the sweat of his own brow only".

Types of people

There are four types of people in any organization.

Supporters	Attackers
Neutralists	Inert

If we look at each category, a lot can be learned for corporate management.

Supporters are of two types. Some blindly support their manager leader. But some other support their leader for there own benefits and hidden agenda. A good number falls to the second sub-category.

Attackers oppose all plans put forth. Whereas neutrals are content worth based. They support all good things and turns away from ill.

The fourth category known as Inert, is unaffected by all actions. Let it be good or bad, they have no interest and no one can motive them to any particular action.

What GOD wants....

Do the God want us to kill each other? 

God is the creator of the Universe. He created the Sun, Earth, man and all the things around. He is omnipresent and powerful. Will the creator want one of his creations to kill the other?

Suppose, you have two son. Let one be a good obedient son and the other be a wicked evil. Now as the father, do you want the good son to kill the bad son?

The answer is in the story of prodigal son in The Bible. Prodigal son was a disaster to the family. He took his entire share and spent all of it in the company of his evil friends. Later, when all his wealth got exhausted, his wicked companions deserted him. After many miserable days with no company and food, he repents and decides to return to his father. 

Upon his return, even to his surprise, father hugged him, kissed him and received him back in home. A real father is like this. He will keep on waiting, waiting till the end of the world for his son to return. He want his son back at Home.

No real father will want his son to be dead or killed for his errors. But want him to repent and correct.

To error is human. Every living being commit mistakes knowingly or unknowingly. It is up to a human to forgive the others errors and give him a second chance. Killing is the END, both the Killer and the Victim falls into Devil's deadly Hell.

Best men ever lived

Many good people lived and died in the world. Some are known and many are unknown. Majority lived for themselves but few lived for others sacrificing all their personal interests. They are the good people who kept the world going. Here few best known good people are selected and listed.

The golden rule used for selecting the best is “the ones who did only good deeds, never injured or murdered (not even enemies), and distanced themselves from all worthless momentarily worldly pleasures( such as money/power/slaves.....)".

Care is taken not to include any criminals in the list. Criminals are peoples with criminal mind and deeds. They are the bad agents who made life miserable for everyone who disagreed with his views. Criminal actions involve kidnapping, looting, killing and womanizing. Disregard to women include being unfaithful by having sex outside marriage and raping innocent girls. Any involvement in such activities is deemed to be evil and such names have to be ignored; however good things they have done otherwise. A good has to be 100% good. The net result of five good things and ten bad things in a man can be Bad only. Based on these criteria here are few top good people.

Jesus Christ

He never sinned. He practiced exactly what he preached. He taught people to love and care for each other. He walked with the downtrodden and poor performing numerous miracles to sooth out their miseries. He was against violence and never ever killed anyone, but preached love thy enemy. He taught the importance of forgiveness. As said in the Bible Mathew 18: 22, Jesus says, “I tell you, forgive not seven times, but seventy-seven times".

Sri Buddha

Sri Buddha was born as a king’s son. But something kept him away from all worldly pleasures right from his childhood. So one day he left the palace and there after lived as a sadhu. His teachings were also based non-violence and peace for all.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mahatma means great soul. Gandhiji was indeed a great man who upheld the principle of non-violence. He proved to the world that weapons are not the ultimate tool for fight for freedom. And lead a bloodless war to free India from British rule.

Mother Theresa

The greatness in mother is that, she never lived for herself but for the sick and orphans. She dedicated and sacrificed her entire life for the people in the slum. The motive behind her deeds is rooted in her belief that God can be pleased by serving the poor and the sick. Being a true follower of Jesus Christ she was compelled to live by Jesus who once said; "For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me". (Matthew 25:35-36). Hence anything Mother did, it was to please her lord god.

Lord Basava
Basavehwara was an Indian philosopher and a social reformer lived during the 1134 -1196 AD in today’s Karnataka, India. Basava fought against the practice of the caste system, which discriminated people. Though he was born into a upper class Brahmin family he left his home to work among people to eradicate untouchability and to  established equality among all human beings.

Good Teacher

A teacher is the one who shoulders the responsibility of molding the young generation. A good teacher clearly tells the children what is good and bad. He will never be biased or self-centered. The significance of teacher is stated in the popular Malayalam proverb, that says, "mother, father and teacher is same as God".

A good teacher will essentially have the following characteristics.

• Deep knowledge in the subject

• Ability to inspire and motivate students

• Be a perfect role model.

Earlier times, teachers were supposed to be like an encyclopedia. But as of now, the information and science is very vast. One can never be an expert in all of these. Hence, the present the best possible is that the teacher should be through and update in his subject area.

Secondly, the teacher should able to inspire the students to new ideas and thought processes. He should  be able to motivate them to achieve further by extending their limits. Craving out the best is the sole responsibility of the teacher.

Third, is  that the teacher should a perfect role model for the students to emulate. A criminal can only drive home the thought that resorting to bad things is alright for own benefit. A killer or a womanizer can tell only one message, that own pleasures is the most important. Such ill schooled students are the one who makes the life miserable for everyone else.

Two Moral Stories

Stories are liked by every one of all ages. Some stories have good ending while others are tragic. Most stories has so much to tell us. Most of them have a message that make us think and act accordingly.

Two stories that  interested me and inspired me a lot is narrated below.

Story1:

Once a eagle was hungry and was flying searching for food. While flying high in the sky and searching the ground for food, he spotted a fox keeping some fleshy worms in custody. He was quite hungry and decided to stop at fox. Eagle pleaded for few worms to feed on. Fox then said, your feathers are very beautiful, give me ten them in exchange. Eagle agreed for the trade. When the eagle ate one worm, he wanted more and more. The trade thus continued between eagle and fox. 

After some time, eagle lost most of his feathers, thus making him almost impossible to fly. Suddenly fox jumped over the poor eagle and killed the eagle to fill his belly.

Moral of this story is that, we should not trade precious gifts given by GOD for momentarily pleasures in the world.

Story 2:

There was a King who ruled a mighty country. He was extremely rich, always happy and spent lot for enjoyment and fun. One day a Sanyasi(guru) visited his palace. Seeing the attitude and life style of the king he decided to warn him not to be irresponsible in duty. Instead directly delivering the message, the Sanyasi presented the King a ring. He informed the King that there is a message inscribed inside the ring, and in difficult times in life he may read the hidden message.

After some years there was an unexpected war with a neighboring enemy country. King was poorly prepared for the war, but took all his army to the battle field to defend his country. However, his army was ill prepared and was getting defeated in the war. Highly disappointed, the King sat down on his chariot for a moment. That time, he remembered about the old Gurus gift. That moment he decided to explore what is there inside that gift. He removed the ring from his fingers and read what was written. It said " this moment shall also pass".

Suddenly he realized the present moment of sadness will also pass-by naturally, just like the earlier happy and joyful moments. This thought rejuvenated him. Once again he gathered his spirits, and fought bravely leaving behind all discouraging thoughts. His warriors also got inspired seeing their King fighting strongly and charging ahead. Finally, their efforts emerged as a team and eventually managed to defeat the opponents.

Moral of this story is that we should not be tied to the fun filled (short) present, but must be prepared and looking forward.

DUMB FROG AND SMART FROG

SCENE1: DUMB FROG

The story goes likes this. There was a frog in a well. He was born there and had never gone out of that well in his entire life. One day another frog joined him from a distant place. Now, the first frog was very happy to meet him and asked, from where he is coming? Then the second said from Ocean.

First asked again, is your ocean home bigger than this well? Yes, said the second. The first got very annoyed, as he could not even imagine something bigger than his 'home well' and drove the second out shouting lair, lair.

SCENE2: SMART FROG

The first frog had an Internet enabled mobile with him. Second frog came with the disclosures. Now, the smart first frog hearing about a new term ocean took his smart phone and browsed the net. He could discover a lot on ocean and accepted the facts presented by his new friend. The smarty then joined the friend for visit to ocean where he got a heavy treat full of tasty tasty fishes.

Inferences:

Always cross check what you hear. Do not continue to live in bull-o-cart age.

Universal Religion Rating

A Six Point Scale for Religion Rating

Any religion should able to change with times and be fully civilized. From prehistoric times there are infinite number of religions in the world. Some are really good and some are not progressive enough. A religion may be rated based on the universal criteria listed below:

1. Is service to humanity, irrespective of caste, color and creed is the policy of the religion?

2. Do the religion advocates and practices non-violence?

3. Is the religion open to criticism?

4. Is the women given equal treatment and opportunity as men, for education and to work?

5. Is freedom of choices in life and religion allowed?

Apply the test above on a 0-5 scale. If an 'Yes' is found as answer to a question, set the score to 1, else mark 0 as score for that question. Once all the five questions are evaluated and scored individually, find the sum of scores from all five questions.  Now a net Score of 5 indicates the religion in consideration is excellent and 4 is Good.

Relevance of each Questions:

Question 1 is here as, the prime concern of every religion should be human beings. With out helping each other there can be no progress and development.

Question 2 is here as, only peace can ensure stability and development. Only a peaceful society can think and work together as a team.

How to choose a right path?

Learn, understand, compare and then choose. A tree can be identified by its fruits. A GOOD tree will never bear a foul/evil fruit.

Never fall for anybody’s words blindly. What is preached should be practiced as well. 

Will all by being a member in some religion go to Heaven?

No. Definitely not.

Consider the case of two persons A and B. A is a 100% believer of his God, but has done only evil things all his life. B is not really a believer of any God, but has done 100% good things through out.

Now, who goes to heaven after death? A or B?

If there is a GOD, he must be compassionate, all forgiving and protective. He will never punish a good innocent man. So, God's choice will be B.

How good is your Leader?

There are so many definitions for the term ‘Leader’. The one impressed me the most is, “Leaders creates new realities”.

A man is as good as his leader. If you follow a loser you will also be a loser. A winner will have a successful leader to guide and lead him.

As a case study, consider Mahatma Gandhi and another a mafia don as two leaders. Those who follows Gandhiji will be peace lovers and righteous; doing only good for the mankind. Millions still love Gandhiji as he fought a great war against the mighty British Empire unarmed and without any bloodshed. On contrary, the followers of mafia don will be criminals, probably constantly chased by police. He may a thief or a smuggler, killing every innocent people coming his way.

In short, most important is the leader or role model one chooses. Leader is a teacher who inspires his flocks to follow his path (knowingly or unknowingly).  If your leader is not right, no wonder you are also wrong.

Hence, choose a righteous LEADER not a sinner to have the share of berth in heaven.
